As a doula who has travelled across the globe and studied various birthing practices in different countries it has only deepened my faith in the work of midwives and doulas and that we have lost one of our greatest strengths over the last century and that being the guidance of a doula during birth. That being the grandmother who had birthed her 5 children and been doula to her childrens children or the black midwife who had birthed all the women in the towns children and knew natural soothing methods and brought wisdom and strength with patience and respect for the power of nature.
Across the globe, the sacred journey of childbirth has often been muted by silence and passivity, leaving many women to face one of their life's most pivotal moments alarmingly underprepared. We don’t control the waves in the ocean just because we have the technology to do so, we would ruin the flow of nature. Yes somehow we decided doctors and hospitals were the better way to birth our babies that trusting the already imprinted wisdom of birth inside the bodies of our mother.
This gap in preparing our mothers isn't just a minor oversight; it's a critical lapse that our healthcare systems and societies can no longer afford to overlook. It’s high time we change the narrative and treat the empowerment and education of expectant mothers as a fundamental right, not just a privilege. I don’t need that you think, I trust my doctor.so lets take a moment and just ask “why is the support of doulas and the power of prenatal education so crucial in transforming birth experiences?
The Empowering Role of Doulas
Doulas offer unwavering support to mothers before, during, and after childbirth, providing guidance to go withthe natural flow and occurrence of labor progress and no need to fight against it, teaching, pain management strategies, and emotional support. Their presence significantly reduces the need for medical interventions and enhancing overall “ease” with the birth experience. Research, including studies from the Cochrane Review, shows that women supported by doulas during labor are less likely to require pain relief or undergo unplanned c - sections. Why? I believe it comes down to the fact that you as the mother have the greatest power or influence on your birth and all you needed was someone in the room to see it, know it, understand it and clear the way for you to do what you just need space and patience to do in the first place. You needed someone to believe in you above the medical system. Because you are not just a statistic or a dot on a graph. You are an individual human. I nurture the mindset that you have permission to follow your instinct.
The Power of Prenatal Education
Prenatal education classes equip women with critical knowledge about the birthing process so that she feels secure in her progress and understands what nature is doing to her body so that she can embrace instead of fight it, techniques for managing labor, and strategies for communicating effectively with healthcare providers. Well-informed mothers are better positioned to make decisions that lead to safer, more positive childbirth experiences. Knowledge is not just power—it’s protection.
International Perspectives on Educated Childbirth
Sweden: Swedish prenatal care includes comprehensive education classes integrated within a healthcare system that prioritizes maternal well-being. This approach has led to some of the lowest infant and maternal mortality rates globally, empowering Swedish mothers with knowledge and support that honor their autonomy and medical needs.
The Netherlands: Famous for its high home birth rates, the Netherlands offers a care model that views birth as a natural, not medical, emergency. Dutch midwives and doulas collaborate closely to educate and reassure expectant mothers, empowering them to take the lead in their childbirth experiences. This method has led to high satisfaction among Dutch mothers, showcasing the benefits of informed birth processes.
Japan: In Japan, prenatal education focuses more on prevention than intervention. Mothers are encouraged to attend classes covering not just childbirth but also postnatal care and parenting. This holistic education model helps mothers approach childbirth with a well-rounded understanding, reducing anxiety and enhancing confidence.
